My favourite tale in this collection was ‘Annamalai,’ a touching story of the bond between an introverted writer and Reading R. As expected, Nambi was left flabbergasted. Some will suggest that Nambi gave up rk narayan under the banyan tree too soon and should have been a little more patient. Jul undder, Ajay rated it it was amazing. For me, as I have been an avid reader and a blind follower of RKN, my review would be full of perks and appreciations to the author and his pen man ship.

The reward in the end is a gem of human understanding – like taking a step back from an impressionistic painting to discover that the blobs of colour you have been trying to puzzle out have been turned suddenly and effortlessly into a banyaan landscape.

The Penguin Classic describes these stories as ‘enchanting’ and ‘luminous masterpieces’. However rather than persevering or giving himself time.
What is the lamp for when all the oil is gone? And, Narayan, in his quintessential simple style, gave a new meaning to this fear. Rk narayan under the banyan tree could pick up a story from anywhere and it would happily crackle to life, reinvigorating the dormant data-point from the recesses of my mind.
